Why cold therapy
Cold-water immersion has been studied across multiple physiological systems. Below are the eight effects with the strongest mechanism evidence — each one citation-linked to the literature.
Studied for easing inflammation and speeding muscle recovery in athletes. Cited ↓
Cold exposure activates calorie-burning brown fat — detected in 23 of 24 healthy men in a landmark study. Cited ↓
In a trial of 3,018 people, 30 days of cold showering meant 29% fewer reported sick days. Cited ↓
Repeated exposure habituates the body's cold-shock response — discipline that compounds with practice. Cited ↓
Cold-water immersion has been measured to spike norepinephrine ~5× — the brain chemical behind drive and focus. Cited ↓
Cold fires up the nervous system — end cold, not hot, to keep the post-plunge energy window open. Cited ↓
Regular cold exposure is linked to more calorie-burning heat production (thermogenesis) in winter swimmers. Cited ↓
The vessel constrict-and-dilate cycle and nervous-system adaptation are studied across the hydrotherapy literature. Cited ↓

Contrast therapy
Alternating between heat and cold is one of the most powerful recovery protocols in sports science. The cardiovascular stress response from contrast therapy drives adaptation that neither modality alone can achieve.
Enquire About BundlesSauna or infrared. Core temp rises. Blood vessels dilate. Muscles relax. HSP proteins activate.
Ice bath. Vasoconstriction. Norepinephrine spikes 200–300%. Inflammation drops. Mental clarity surges.
The contrast hour
Three phases — cold immersion, neutral recovery, heat exposure. Time it properly and the nervous system does the rest. Try the protocol now.
After the plunge
The contrast hour closes in parasympathetic rebound — the 30-to-60 minute window where the nervous system runs unusually quiet. The morning ritual our sister brand makes for that exact window: an eight-plant caffeine-free herbal blend, ginkgo, gotu kola, brahmi, L-theanine, moringa. Daytime clarity, no jitter.

Why buy from Vivamare
Vivamare is a young brand — so we won't show you a wall of five-star reviews we haven't earned yet. Here's what is verifiable today: the same factory that builds for several of Australia's best-known cold-plunge names, independently certified to electrical-safety standards, backed by a Sunshine Coast service team. The proof is in the build, not the testimonials.
Built in the same factory trusted by several of Australia's leading cold-plunge brands — the pedigree, sold direct.
CE, SAA, IPX4 and ETL certified — tested to electrical-safety and water-ingress standards, not self-declared.
After-sales support based on the Sunshine Coast, not offshore. Every enquiry answered within one business day.
A full 12-month warranty. And the part that matters: if the cooling system ever fails, you get a brand-new unit — free — with parts serviced from within Australia.
FAQ
The things people ask before they buy. Anything else — call 0452 237 602.
Complete systems start at $6,990 for the Vivamare Essential (cedar oval tub + XY-Pro chiller). All-in-one systems with built-in chiller start at $10,990 — delivery and installation included in South East QLD. Chiller-only units start at $4,490. The final price depends on the model, power (1HP or 2HP) and delivery to your location — we confirm it on your quote.
An all-in-one (G5 or G9) is the complete system — a 316 stainless & cedar tub with the chiller built in. A chiller unit (SY-Pro or XY-Pro) pairs with a tub you already own or buy separately. If you're starting from scratch, go all-in-one; if you have a tub, start with a chiller.
The G5 runs 3–42°C; the G9 goes to a true 0°C ice bath (and up to 45°C). Both heat as well as cool, so you can run cold plunges, warm soaks, or hot–cold contrast therapy from one unit.
Units are built to order and shipped to Australia — allow around 8–12 weeks. If you need it sooner, ask us about current stock and faster freight options.
Yes — we're Sunshine Coast based but deliver Australia-wide, with after-sales support serviced within Australia rather than offshore.
A full 12-month warranty. The important part: if the cooling system ever fails, you get a brand-new unit free, with parts serviced from within Australia. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law always apply on top of this.
Every unit is CE, SAA (the Australian electrical-safety standard), IPX-4 (water-ingress) and ETL certified — independently tested, not self-declared. Cold plunges are wellness equipment, not medical devices; consult your doctor before starting cold immersion, especially with heart, respiratory or autonomic conditions.
It's a heat-pump chiller, so it's far cheaper than constantly buying ice, and with the insulated cover on it sips power holding temperature. It runs at around the noise level of a home air-conditioner.

The evidence
Every claim on this page traces to peer-reviewed research. We don't sell magic. Where the evidence base is small, contested, or industry-adjacent, we say so plainly. The papers below are the actual literature behind cold-water immersion physiology.
Šrámek, P., Šimečková, M., Janský, L., Šavlíková, J., & Vybíral, S. (2000). Human physiological responses to immersion into water of different temperatures. European Journal of Applied Physiology, 81(5), 436–442. DOI →
5-fold plasma norepinephrine increase and 2.5-fold dopamine increase during 14°C water immersion (vs no spike at thermoneutral). The catecholamine paper everyone references for the "mood and focus" claim.
van Marken Lichtenbelt, W. D., Vanhommerig, J. W., Smulders, N. M., et al. (2009). Cold-activated brown adipose tissue in healthy men. New England Journal of Medicine, 360(15), 1500–1508. DOI →
PET-CT-detected brown adipose tissue activity in 23 of 24 healthy adult men under cold exposure. The paper that established BAT is physiologically relevant in adult humans, not just infants and small mammals.
Søberg, S., Löfgren, J., Philipsen, F. E., et al. (2021). Altered brown fat thermoregulation and enhanced cold-induced thermogenesis in young, healthy, winter-swimming men. Cell Reports Medicine, 2(10), 100408. DOI →
Studied Scandinavian men who winter-swim 2–3× per week alongside hot-sauna sessions. Found enhanced cold-induced thermogenesis and altered BAT thermoregulation. The basis for the Søberg principle: end with cold, not heat.
Buijze, G. A., Sierevelt, I. N., van der Heijden, B. C., Dijkgraaf, M. G., & Frings-Dresen, M. H. (2016). The effect of cold showering on health and work: a randomized controlled trial. PLoS ONE, 11(9), e0161749. DOI →
3,018 participants randomized to 30/60/90 seconds of cold showering for 30 days vs. hot-only controls. Cold groups self-reported 29% fewer sickness-absence days. Honest caveat: self-reported, not lab-confirmed, and illness-day count itself didn't differ — what changed was time off work.
Tipton, M. J., Collier, N., Massey, H., Corbett, J., & Harper, M. (2017). Cold water immersion: kill or cure? Experimental Physiology, 102(11), 1335–1355. DOI →
Tipton's group has characterised the cold shock response — gasp reflex, hyperventilation, sympathetic tachycardia, peripheral vasoconstriction — for three decades. Also the habituation work: repeated exposure dampens the shock response over weeks. Important safety read alongside the benefits.
Mooventhan, A., & Nivethitha, L. (2014). Scientific evidence-based effects of hydrotherapy on various systems of the body. North American Journal of Medical Sciences, 6(5), 199–209. DOI →
Narrative review covering hydrotherapy effects across cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory, immune, and inflammatory systems (1986–2012 literature). Useful single document for the multi-system overview — but heterogeneous methodology across the studies it cites; treat as map, not proof.
What we can't claim. Vivamare cold plunge systems are wellness equipment, not medical devices. They are not assessed by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and we make no claims that they treat, prevent, or cure any condition. The papers above describe what cold-water immersion has been studied for — not what our product does for you specifically. Reported subjective effects vary. Consult your doctor before starting cold-immersion therapy, especially with cardiovascular, respiratory, or autonomic conditions.
